Creeping mallow

Modiola caroliniana

Other names

Ground ivy (nb. there are several other species also called ground ivy). The name should probably be reserved for Glechoma hederacea.

Description

Creeping herb which roots along stems that are about 60 cm. Occasionally climbs. Flowers orange to red, closing up at night.

Distribution

Common in waste ground, lawns, pasture all over N Island, Marlborough and Canterbury.

Species affected

Has caused staggers in sheep in Australia and the USA, but no reports from NZ.

Clinical signs acute

In the USA reported to cause incoordination and prostration in goats, sheep and cattle. In goats posterior paralysis was observed. Convulsions may occur before death.
