Welcome to Massey University Vet School's poisonous plants website. This site contains pictures of most of the common poisonous plants in New Zealand, and some information on the animal species usually affected, signs of intoxication and treatment, where known.

Beware!

The information in this website is correct to the best of our knowledge. It was designed as a teaching aid for veterinary students and is not intended as a guide to home treatment. In cases of poisoning, please contact your veterinary surgeon or doctor, or the National Poisons Information Centre (hotline 0800 764 766; for non-urgent information, Ph. 03 479 1200 between 9am and 5pm week days only).

This site is a work in progress and is not complete. There are many potentially poisonous plants in NZ which are not yet included. If you have any comments or suggestions, please email Dr. Paul Chambers

Remember that poisonous plants are by definition poisonous - handle them with care! Some plants can also cause skin sensitisation in people and gloves may be necessary.
